ChoreTracking and a shared spreadsheet can both record household work and compare time. Choose ChoreTracking if voice, quick presets and built-in views make logging easier for your household. Keep a spreadsheet if you want to design your own fields, formulas and workflow. Neither tool decides what is fair or gets the work done for you.

What changes when you move from a spreadsheet?
| Need | ChoreTracking | Shared spreadsheet |
|---|---|---|
| Record work | Voice transcription, quick presets or typed entries with a person, task, category and minutes. | You choose the columns and enter or import the records. Other input tools depend on your spreadsheet setup. |
| Compare contributions | Built-in views of logged minutes by person, category and selected period. | You create totals, percentages and charts with your chosen formulas. |
| Customize the model | Uses the app's fields and categories; minutes are self-reported time. | You can design custom fields, weights and calculations. Someone must maintain them. |
| Share across phones | Free records stay in one browser/device. Paid Couple and Group households add cloud sync and separate account logins. | Depends on the service, sharing permissions and accounts you choose. |
| Assign and remind | No automatic chore assignment, rotation, chore reminders, reward points or allowance payments. | You can build an assignment list; reminders or automation depend on additional configuration and service features. |
| Export | Export work logs as CSV for use in a spreadsheet. Signed-in users can also export account and household data as JSON. | Download formats, exports and version history depend on the spreadsheet service. |
| Cost | Free local tracking with published limits; paid monthly household plans for shared access. See the current prices below. | Depends on your service and account plan. A sheet you already have may add no cost. |
| Privacy and backup | Local free records need your own backup; voice uses online processing. Paid records use shared cloud storage. | Storage, collaborators, backup and any dictation tools follow the service and permissions you select. |
What does ChoreTracking cost?
ChoreTracking offers free local tracking, Couple at US$6.99 per month per household, and Group at US$12.99 per month per household. Prices are in US dollars; any applicable tax is shown at checkout.
- Free: no account required; one browser/device; 3 person labels; 5 voice submissions per day and 150 total; 10 combined Type and Quick entries per day.
- Couple: 2 separate account logins and 3 person labels, with shared cloud access.
- Group: up to 10 separate account logins and 10 person labels, with shared cloud access.
Paid plans add unlimited logging, subject to service safeguards. The 60-second voice-recording limit still applies. Subscriptions renew monthly until canceled.
See the pricing page for full plan details, safeguards and cancellation information. Person labels identify whose work is recorded; they are not separate logins. A household can record multiple people's work on one free device, but shared access across separate accounts requires a paid plan.
Does ChoreTracking provide a more objective fairness score?
No. ChoreTracking adds the minutes each person records; it does not independently verify duration or weight tasks for difficulty, care quality or emotional effort. It does not calculate a zero-sum points balance or a financial score. A spreadsheet can reproduce the time calculation if you set it up. In either tool, unlogged planning or care work will be missing.
For example, 60 minutes recorded by Alex and 30 by Sam make 90 logged minutes: roughly 67% and 33%, with a 30-minute difference. Those fictional numbers describe recorded time, not who is a better partner. See the worked example and calculation.
Does local tracking mean voice stays on the device?
No. Free work records stay in your browser, but voice audio passes through our servers to an OpenAI transcription model. We do not store the audio after the request completes. Voice recordings are limited to 60 seconds and require the network. Operational usage metadata is processed for security and cost control. Read the Privacy Policy for the processing and retention details.
Use typed entries or quick presets if you do not want to send voice audio for transcription. Clearing browser storage or moving to another device can lose local records, so export useful work logs as CSV.
When should you keep a spreadsheet?
Keep your sheet if everyone uses it consistently, your custom columns matter, or you want full control of calculations and do not need another tool. ChoreTracking is an option when its logging methods and built-in time views reduce the work of maintaining your record. Try free local mode before deciding whether paid shared access is useful.
Neither option replaces agreeing on responsibilities. ChoreTracking records work; it does not automatically schedule, rotate or remind people to do it.
Can you use both?
Yes. Export ChoreTracking work logs as CSV and open the file in your spreadsheet for your own analysis. That export is a file you manage, not a live two-way spreadsheet integration.
